Whether best remembered for his drumming Nirvana, his tireless dedication when recording all of the instruments and vocals used in the Foo Fighter’s self-titled first album or his “Leather and Lace” duet with Will Farrell, Dave Grohl has enamored himself in the lives and hearts of music fans all over the world. A product of the Washington, D.C. suburbs, Dave Grohl has been a part of music from his earliest years, and has been an unstoppable force in creating a musical landscape full of wailing guitars, shredding drums and vocals that somehow unite grunge with soul.
Grohl has played with over 30 rock and punk bands, from his early start at age 15 with Freak Baby, to Dain Bramage and Scream, ultimately leading him to drum for Nirvana, establishing his presence in the world of rock music and thrusting him into stardom. Grohl’s journey into Rock Divinity was more than a series of fortunate events, but maybe also a touch of madness and intense drive. Without any official band members, Grohl recorded almost the entire debut album for Foo Fighters alone, playing drums, guitar and vocals. His early drumming actually started in his bedroom, using pillows for practice equipment, and he has even noted that he plays guitar better than he plays drums, but achieved his drummer status through smoke and mirror techniques that, more or less, gave him the appearance of having god-like drum skills, while he claims he was really just a little better than the drummers he replaced. Grohl has also played for Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D and Killing Joke.
Regardless of his twisty path to stardom, Grohl has continued to prove that he is worthy of the praise and adoration of his fans. He is a fan of music, and seems to enjoy the process of creating music for its own sake, rather than the fame that comes his way. This may be especially notable in his varied instrument favorites, particularly guitars. While he recently was seen in his YouTube studio recording of Wasted Light playing a custom Gibson, Grohl has also been known to play a Fender from time to time.
Grohl’s career, to date, has carved his place in music history as one of the most versatile and talented musicians of our time. Grohl, and members of Foo Fighters, have been likened to this generation’s Led Zepplin, a big set of footprints to follow in an even bigger arena. With the lucky steps of his past leading him forward, there is little doubt that Dave Grohl will continue to entertain, shock and amaze fans for generations to come.
